How to Create a Focal Point using Gimp

Here is another video in our beginners series of 'How to' Gimp tutorials

This beginner tutorial explores how to create a focal point (make one part of the image stand out) using the program Gimp. In this video we look at how to use a selection tool and quick mask to highlight (isolate) a key feature and separate it from the background. We then apply a filter to blur the background creating a focal point on the clear section of the image.

Even if you are completely new to using Gimp this should be easy enough to follow. Have the video open while you work on a project and trying watching just a few instructions on screen at a time, pausing in-between.

Gimp is an image editing program that can be downloaded for free on the internet. Version used in the tutorial is 2.6.11

The tutorial shows how to change the colour of a car, but could be used for any other project, so long as it has enough colour.

How to Create an Animated Profile Picture using Gimp

A short video demonstrating how you can easily make an animated (moving) profile picture. This of course could be used to create other short animations as well, however this video focuses on using a few images to make a short gif animation.

This tutorial uses the program Gimp which can be downloaded free online. The video has been made for anyone who would like to learn more about creating gif animations and using Gimp.

What's the Magic Password?

The one that stays secret!

Having a secure password plays a big part in staying safe online. Not only can it stop others accessing your information without your permission, it could stop a stranger stealing your identity.
Check the links at the bottom of this post for some great advice on creating a secure password. Remember to keep it private and to never write it down.

One of the best ideas for creating a secure password I've heard recently was to borrow a line from a favorite song. Here's how it works:

Using a Song/Phrase
'Party rock is in the house tonight'
Use the first letter from each word - priitht
To mix this up further I'll make all the constanents capitals (passwords are case sensitive) PRiiTHT

Adding Numbers
It's important to also have numbers in your passwords. Try not to choose a birthdate or anything that could be easily connected to you, ie street address, phone number.
Try to create your own system for adding numbers. Here's an example:
Let's say my favourite number was 4. To create a different password for different sites I visit, I could use the same password with one simple change. Count the letters in the name of the site and multiply it by your favourite number.
So Hotmail would be 7 letters X 4 = 28. So my hotmail password is PRiiTHT28
But my Goanimate password would be 9 letters x 4 = 36. So my password is PRiiTHT36

Going Further
Thats ok, but I'd like there to be a bit more of a difference, so I'll also use the last letter of each site.
Hotmail = PRiiHT28l
Goanimate = PRiiTHT36e

Final Thoughts
With this method, all I need to remember is my system and my favourite song or key sentence. Just remember to keep those private too. Don't go bragging about how awesome your password is and tell everyone!
What I like about this password is even if someone accidentally caught a glimpse of it, they would have a hard time trying to remember it. Not like Sunshine35!

Driftwood Sculpture Competition.

Theme: One Ocean – Too Much Love?

During Department of Conservation Seaweek 2012, March 3-11, Creative Napier will hold a Driftwood Sculpture competition open to all beach combers.

Using suitable materials found on the beach create an exciting and inventive picture, sculpture or hanging for display in the town centre shop windows (CBD) and in the entrance foyer to the Aquarium. Only materials found on the beach can be used and may include clean rubbish as well as driftwood and stones.

Two categories– under 16’s and over 16’s - prizes will be awarded in each section.

Blogsy And Wordfoto

I'm using my iPad to create this blog post. The app I'm using is called Blogsy. I've watched quite a few video tutorials shared in the app and so far I'm pretty impressed. It's all drag and drop which is great when using a touch screen.

Below is an image I created using another great app called Wordfoto. I've really shared this image to test uploading images using an iPad. So far so good.

All it takes to create your own Wordfoto is these simple steps:

Download the app from the AppStore
Open the app on your iDevice
Take a photo or select an image from your photo library
Create a set of words (up to 10 from memory)
Choose your style
Save and share

It's really that simple. If you have an iPhone or iTouch I recommend checking it out.

Hawkes Bay Mathletics - Year 7

On Tuesday, 4 Year 7 teams travelled to Havelock North Intermediate to compete in the annual HB Mathletics, where they faced off against 16 other teams from across the Bay. They competed in four grueling sections, including team problem solving, keypad, and individual.

T.I.S 1 - Second - Jade Chan, Brandon Huang and Lachie Calder - $30 each prize.

T.I.S 2 - Ninth - Calvin Herbert, Jarrod Hellyer, Georgia Shey

T.I.S 3 - Third - $20 each prize

In the individual finals, Lachie Calder came second for a $20 prize.

Tech Challenge School Finals

As most of you will know we have been doing Tech Challenges in class to find the best two people from each class to go into the school finals. the winners will go into the Hawkes Bay Tech Challenge for the Tech Challenge we had to make a balloon powered car . The team whose car went the furtherest would win.

All we had to use was

One roll of tape

One balloon

Two ping pong balls

Five rubber bands

Tweleve popcilcal sticks

Four kebab sticks

One pair of sissors

The only only rules with this were the balloon had to be attatched to the car and you were not allowed to give it any assistance to the car once you had set it off.

Congratulations to linda and kaya from room 2 who came 1st and to marcus and travis from room 24 who came 2nd .

Building Computers

We also have been researching some of the parts and finding out what their role is in making a PC run.

The Tech Challenge

In room 5 we've been preparing for the Tech Challenge.

A Tech Challenge is when you are given a real life situation and you have to solve it using the materials you are given.
The challenge we had to do was to make a contraption that could reach over a three metre gap, grab a balloon and bring it back over without the contraption or the balloon touching the ground.
We were given the following materials:

4 sheets of newspaper
1 meter tape
1 meter of string

It was really hard because most of us hadn't done anything like this before. It was challenging for most of us.

The pressure has been on with many wanting to be the first to cross the finish line!With one practice cancelled due to rain and few practices to go, Mohaka hopefuls are clinging to there seats.

The stakes are high for a badge on the shield;Mohaka needs the badge to be up with Kaweka and Takitimu.

If we all persist and try our hardest WE WILL SUCCEED!!!

Digi Kids - Video Styles

This week DigiKids were learning about different styles of film. Below are example videos for you to check out and a short description of each.

Check out this really creative video from the band Ok Go. This is a CONTINUOUS SHOT (camera records all the action in one take without pausing). See if you can spot any editing.

This next video is an example of STOP MOTION. Each frame (frames played quickly = moving picture) has been carefully planned to give the effect of motion. See how the sound effects almost lead us to believe it is real!

This last video is called a TIME LAPSE. The creator of the video took a photo (captured a frame) every 40 minutes for 74 days! The end result is a video playing back 30 frames per second. What an amazing way to examine decomposing fruit!

An Animated Guide to Earthquakes and Tsunamis

Japan recently suffered a tremendously powerful earthquake. Scientists have claimed it was as much as 1,000 times more powerful than the Christchurch earthquake earlier this year. The main devastation in Japan has been caused by a tsunami caused as a result of the quake.

3D Photocopying!

You may or may not have heard of 3D photocopying. That's right, copying things in 3D.

The machine uses a type of 'high tech glue gun' that is connected to a computer. The printer then melts the roll of glue at around 260 degrees and builds up the object layer by layer.

In the video you will see a object being created that is used to keep your earphones tidy (wrapped around it).

The printer even build objects with movable parts!

Psychiatrists are concerned over what could happen when children have a barbie doll which has a hidden camera in it. They think children may video what may be looked on as inappropriate and breaching personal information. They are asking parents to boycott the purchase of these dolls.

The new barbie doll can a lot of things like do like record 30 minutes of full video. The video can be uploaded to Youtube and other websites for the whole world to see. The Barbie camera is similar to the nanny cam, which is a hidden camera inside a household object, which allows the parent to check on the baby while they are away. The doll has a camera at the back of its head to record and a USB cable under the doll.

(It's a hidden camera. Children don't look at video clips the way that adults do)

Playground Designs from 2009

As most of you know the recent chocolate promotion at school was a fundraiser towards adding a new playground at TIS. The designs proposed are especially suited for Intermediate aged students.

In 2009 two classes at TIS decided to investigate the different designs of playgrounds as part of their Inquiry to find out what sort of equipment would be best for our school. Check out some of the cool designs they came up with!

Here's a great game to test your general knowledge of different place names around the world.

You can sign up to the site geosense or simply click VISIT SITE to dive straight in. For practice I recommend single player mode to get used to the format.

To play the game users need to watch for a location at the top of the screen and then click on the map where they think the exact location is to be found.

Points are awarded based on how many kilometres away from the exact location was selected.

This week at school we're sharing our messages at school using txt language.

The idea is to get everyone interested in the messages and to hopefully pay attention.

That way at the start of morning tea when there are meetings everyone should show up.

The messages are also shown at the end of the PowerPoint in plain English to ensure everyone understands.

CSI Taradale

Each year students create a video to share with the local contributing schools (local schools with students coming to Taradale Intermediate). This year students decided on a CSI theme.

Although time ran out the finished movie shows off some of the many areas and activities our school has to offer.

Shot Put - Skills Analysis

In Room 46 we have been learning the steps and skills involved to correctly throw a shot put.

We recorded ourselves throwing the shot put and are using some videos from youtube to help us compare our throws. We are doing this to work out our next skill steps so we can throw further.

Interactive Fiction - A Bear's Night Out

What is Interactive Fiction?

"Interactive fiction' is a broad term for any sort of story in which the reader takes a role more active than reading words and turning pages; the term has been applied to all sorts of fiction that doesn't fit the traditional mold of short stories, novels, and the like". edutechwiki

This week in Room 46 we have been reading an Interactive fiction game called ' A Bear's Night Out. The story starts with you, the reader as a teddy bear on top of a bed. Using simple commands the reader then has to navigate their way around the room and house searching for clues and investiagting. The story unfolds as more areas are explored and information is found.

Creating Video Games

Playing video games can be a lot of fun. It's even more fun when you have planned and created the games yourself!

Room 46 have been using Game Maker (free download here) to create their own games. Each step has to be carefully planned and each object programmed for a specific task. Things don't always go to plan so we have had to use our problem solving skills to analyze our games.

This week for our buddy class activity we showed students from Room 21 how to create their own games.

Canteen Challenge - Finalists

After two sessions of planning, sketching, measuring and building a 3D model of the school canteen using Google SketchUp the time has come to pick a winner.

Below is a short video of the top 3D models created by students. Each student rotates through their model to share a little of their design. Some groups have started to add objects inside their models such as benches and fridges. It would be amazing to see what groups could create if given more time.

You can help choose the winner in two ways. Either vote on the poll at the top left of the blog or add a comment below stating why you think Canteen 1,2,3 or 4 should be the winner.

Learning to use SketchUp has been a lot of fun and a great way to learn about length and area. We will continue to use our models to discuss how to work out the area of
2D and 3D shapes.

Canteen Challenge - Google SketchUp

This week the FL maths class were given the challenge of making a scale model of the school canteen using Google SketchUp.

As an extra challenge groups had to work out their own system of measurement after a quick hold of a metre ruler.

Each group had three members, a BOSS (making sure everything is running smoothly), an ARCHITECT (in charge of sketching and measuring the canteen) and a DESIGNER (creating the model using Google SketchUp).

Some groups found the measuring task difficult without a metre ruler to use. Others found using a new programme quick difficult. There are lot of video tutorials on Youtube on how to create different models.

Here are some photos and clips of the class hard at work. Stay tuned to find out which group will win the supreme design award!
